Americans Anti-Big Business, Big Government
Frank Newport, GallupAmericans' satisfaction with the size and power of the federal government is at a record-low 29% and their satisfaction with the size and influence of major corporations remains near the all-time low at 30% -- making both highly susceptible targets for politicians and presidential candidates in this election year.Gallup began asking these questions in its annual Mood of the Nation surveys in 2001. About half of Americans in January 2001 were satisfied with the size of the federal government and of major corporations, and satisfaction with both has generally been declining since.

“The boat slid down the Boundary Creek ramp…” – or some variation can begin the tale. Each river has a point of reference, which triggers memories grown dim with the distractions of daily living. Under Obama, DC Is More Divided Than Ever
Brown & Allen, PoliticoCandidate Barack Obama promised to transcend Washington partisanship.President Obama plummeted into it.As the House returns Tuesday for the final session of his first term, Obama’s failure to fulfill this central claim of his 2008 campaign has never been more glaringly obvious. The hard truth is that Washington next year will look indistinguishable from the one Obama warned against during his election-night victory speech, when he called on Republicans and Democrats to “resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has...
Martin Luther King Service In Atlanta Gets Political
Politics loomed over the ceremonies held Monday to mark the Rev. Why Are Obama's Critics So Smart?
Nile Gardiner, Daily TelegraphProminent Obama-backer Andrew Sullivan has a rather pompous piece in this week’s edition of Newsweek, which the magazine has subtly headlined on its cover page: “Why are Obama’s critics so dumb?” You can read the whole article here at The Daily Beast, but his conclusion pretty well sums up the entire piece, which reads a lot like a desperate White House press release:If I sound biased, that’s because I am. Biased toward the actual record, not the spin; biased toward a president who has conducted himself with grace and calm under incredible...

Why Huntsman Reached the End of Road
Sean Trende, RealClearPoliticsFormer Utah governor Jon Huntsman has become the second Republican voted off the island in the 2012 Republican primary campaign (we don't count Tim Pawlenty or Herman Cain, both of whom dropped out before voting began). His decision late Sunday to suspend his campaign is a bit jarring, given that he had insisted after a disappointing third place finish in New Hampshire that he was staying in through South Carolina.I suspect that what happened is a combination of two things. First, financial reality set in. If you don't think a candidate is going to win, you're hard pressed to...

Quin Hillyer, American SpectatorSince I wrote this little blog post the other day, picked up at Real Clear Politics, all of a sudden (by coincidence; I'm not claiming I had anything to do with it, but just am remarking on how rapidly the 'meme' has taken off) all sorts of people are suddenly realizing that Mitt Romney is hardly the candidate with the best chance to beat Barack Obama. It certainly isn't all at the Center for Individual Freedom, but we did have a written colloquy on the subject the other day, with Troy Senik and Ashton Ellis insightfully joining me in weighing in. Mitt Can Lose SC - If Conservatives Toughen Up
Tim Stanley, TelegraphMitt Romney is suddenly leading everywhere – except where it matters. Pollsters say that he’s running well nationally in the Republican presidential contest, but South Carolina – which votes on the 21st – is too close to call. Insider Advantage puts Romney on 23 percent in the Palmetto state, Newt Gingrich on 21 percent and Rick Santorum on 14 percent. The New York Times has made a prediction that takes into account all the momentum swinging around following Mitt’s New Hampshire win.

Romney Makes History
Karl Rove, Wall Street JournalIn an open race for the GOP nomination, no Republican has won both Iowa and New Hampshire, as Mitt Romney has. No one has come in fourth or fifth in New Hampshire, as Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum did, and become the nominee. No one has entirely skipped Iowa, as Jon Huntsman did, and won elsewhere. No one has recovered after grabbing the 1% that Rick Perry received in the Granite State. And no one became the nominee after failing to win one of the first two contests, a position in which Ron Paul finds himself. All this means history will be made this year, no matter what happens next.

Some Say The U.N. Should Control The Internet
Companies and organizations now can apply for a Web address all their own, with their own suffixes. Along with dot-com and dot-org, we may soon see dot-Starbucks or dot-New York. The move focuses attention on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN is currently the only organization with the authority to regulate the global Internet ? but that could change. The change in naming rules raises questions about who, if anyone, should control the Internet. Some countries say the United States has too much influence over the Internet and advocate instead that it be placed under the control of the United Nations.

The Most Boring NH Primary Ever
Walter Shapiro, The New RepublicHaving emerged unbloodied Sunday morning from the weekend’s debate double-header, Mitt Romney barreled down Route 101 at more than 80 miles an hour towards a noon rally at the Rochester Opera House. (I can verify the speedometer reading since the Romney campaign bus zoomed past me in a 65-mile-an-hour zone and I tailed it until it turned off the highway). The front-runner’s haste was understandable, since Romney wants this primary inscribed in the record books before his double-digit lead vanishes.

Advice from 30,000 miles on the Trail
Water Walkin’ One of our readers recently posed a good question: “Your guidebook, ‘Hiking from Here to WOW: Utah Canyon Country,’ has several photos of you guys splashing through water. We’re wondering, what’s your footwear solution for dry/wet/dry/wet terrain?” It’s now too cold for hiking through water in the canyons of Utah. But the daytime [...]

How Rick Santorum's 'Google Problem' Has Endured
Google Rick Santorum's name and one of the top results is a scatological and sexual site called SpreadingSantorum.com. The site is an online prank, staged in 2003 by gay-rights activist Dan Savage to redefine the former senator's name, that has endured thanks to the power of Google's algorithm.
If Romney Is the Nominee, He Will Lose
Michael Walsh, National ReviewSome people today seem to have trouble with my formulation that the consistent anti-Romney sentiment (for such it is) of around 75 percent — reflected in the Iowa caucuses results — is somehow logically fallacious, and that one could just as easily make the same short-end equation regarding Perry, Paul, Gingrich, Bachmann, et al. They entirely miss the point. From the start of the GOP race, the contest has been divided between Mitt Romney on one side and Everybody Else Plus Ron Paul on the other, as conservatives examined possible alternatives to the...
Enthusiasm Lacking as N.H. Primary Nears
Erin McPike, RealClearPoliticsMANCHESTER, N.H. -- A major political contest is happening in this state just five days from now, but you'd barely notice if you spent a day here. The Granite State takes pride in its first-primary-in-the-nation status: Every four years, politicians who hope to be president pound its pavement, meet its voters and eat its pie. The Republicans vying to take on President Obama in November have done some of that this cycle, but not enough to excite the state's residents. Many of them are greeting Tuesday's voting with a collective yawn. After an early morning event Thursday, Mitt...

In the 1970s, a sizable number of U.S. servicemen in Vietnam self-identified as heroin addicts. Harder for Americans to Rise From Lower Rungs
Jason DeParle, NY TimesWASHINGTON — Benjamin Franklin did it. Henry Ford did it. And American life is built on the faith that others can do it, too: rise from humble origins to economic heights. “Movin’ on up,” George Jefferson-style, is not only a sitcom song but a civil religion. Occupy protesters, like these in Flint, Mich., have pushed discussions about economic mobility toward center stage. Follow @NYTNational for breaking news and headlines. It Might Just Be Santorum's Time
Charles Hurt, Washington TimesThe reason that the overtly religious Rick Santorum has never been taken seriously as a presidential contender isn't just because the media is made up of mainly Godless heathens. That, of course, is a large part of it, but not the whole reason. The other big reason he has been written off from the start is that most political reporters have covered the former Pennsylvania senator in the Senate for the better part of a decade and have reached the conclusion that he is about as lovable as a porcupine with the charm of a possum. He is not your average back-slapping, jovial politician.Â

Will Republicans Hand the Left a VAT Victory?
Daniel Mitchell, WSJIn a recent interview on these pages, presidential candidate Mitt Romney refused to rule out a value-added tax (VAT). He suggested that this hidden form of a national sales tax"”which is embedded in the prices of goods and services during the production process"”might be appropriate, particularly as a way of financing other tax cuts. He's not the only Republican to speak favorably of a VAT. Herman Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan featured a flat tax and national sales tax. Very few people realized, however, that the final 9 was a VAT. Â
