Americans Anti-Big Business, Big Government

Frank Newport, GallupAmericans' satisfaction with the size and power of the federal government is at a record-low 29% and their satisfaction with the size and influence of major corporations remains near the all-time low at 30% -- making both highly susceptible targets for politicians and presidential candidates in this election year.Gallup began asking these questions in its annual Mood of the Nation surveys in 2001. About half of Americans in January 2001 were satisfied with the size of the federal government and of major corporations, and satisfaction with both has generally been declining since.

Under Obama, DC Is More Divided Than Ever

Nile Gardiner, Daily TelegraphProminent Obama-backer Andrew Sullivan has a rather pompous piece in this week’s edition of Newsweek, which the magazine has subtly headlined on its cover page: “Why are Obama’s critics so dumb?” You can read the whole article here at The Daily Beast, but his conclusion pretty well sums up the entire piece, which reads a lot like a desperate White House press release:If I sound biased, that’s because I am. Romney Makes History

Karl Rove, Wall Street JournalIn an open race for the GOP nomination, no Republican has won both Iowa and New Hampshire, as Mitt Romney has. No one has come in fourth or fifth in New Hampshire, as Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum did, and become the nominee. No one has entirely skipped Iowa, as Jon Huntsman did, and won elsewhere. No one has recovered after grabbing the 1% that Rick Perry received in the Granite State. And no one became the nominee after failing to win one of the first two contests, a position in which Ron Paul finds himself. All this means history will be made this year, no matter what happens next.

Some Say The U.N. Should Control The Internet

Companies and organizations now can apply for a Web address all their own, with their own suffixes. Along with dot-com and dot-org, we may soon see dot-Starbucks or dot-New York. The move focuses attention on the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. ICANN is currently the only organization with the authority to regulate the global Internet ? but that could change. The change in naming rules raises questions about who, if anyone, should control the Internet. Some countries say the United States has too much influence over the Internet and advocate instead that it be placed under the control of the United Nations.

The Most Boring NH Primary Ever

Walter Shapiro, The New RepublicHaving emerged unbloodied Sunday morning from the weekend’s debate double-header, Mitt Romney barreled down Route 101 at more than 80 miles an hour towards a noon rally at the Rochester Opera House. (I can verify the speedometer reading since the Romney campaign bus zoomed past me in a 65-mile-an-hour zone and I tailed it until it turned off the highway). The front-runner’s haste was understandable, since Romney wants this primary inscribed in the record books before his double-digit lead vanishes.

Taxpayers Are Still on the Hook for Wall St.

Timothy Haight, OC RegisterThe 2008 financial crisis produced an unprecedented bailout of financial institutions by the federal government, to the tune of more than $700 billion. This cash infusion was designed to prevent a catastrophic collapse of our financial institutions. While the government's intervention was necessary to restore liquidity and solvency, the unintended consequence was to reward bad behavior on the part of Wall Street financiers.

Mitt Romney's Achilles' Heel

Grace-Marie Turner, The American SpectatorFormer Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's narrow win in the Iowa caucuses and his lead in the New Hampshire primary could catapult him to the GOP presidential nomination, but if he is to have any hope of gaining favor with conservative voters to get elected in November, he must escape the chains of Romneycare.Romney has been unwilling to repudiate the health reform he signed into law in 2006, complete with the hugely unpopular individual mandate.

If Romney Is the Nominee, He Will Lose

Michael Walsh, National ReviewSome people today seem to have trouble with my formulation that the consistent anti-Romney sentiment (for such it is) of around 75 percent — reflected in the Iowa caucuses results — is somehow logically fallacious, and that one could just as easily make the same short-end equation regarding Perry, Paul, Gingrich, Bachmann, et al. They entirely miss the point. From the start of the GOP race, the contest has been divided between Mitt Romney on one side and Everybody Else Plus Ron Paul on the other, as conservatives examined possible alternatives to the...

Many of them are greeting Tuesday's voting with a collective yawn. After an early morning event Thursday, Mitt...

It Might Just Be Santorum's Time

Charles Hurt, Washington TimesThe reason that the overtly religious Rick Santorum has never been taken seriously as a presidential contender isn't just because the media is made up of mainly Godless heathens. That, of course, is a large part of it, but not the whole reason. The other big reason he has been written off from the start is that most political reporters have covered the former Pennsylvania senator in the Senate for the better part of a decade and have reached the conclusion that he is about as lovable as a porcupine with the charm of a possum. He is not your average back-slapping, jovial politician.

Will Republicans Hand the Left a VAT Victory?

Daniel Mitchell, WSJIn a recent interview on these pages, presidential candidate Mitt Romney refused to rule out a value-added tax (VAT). He suggested that this hidden form of a national sales tax"”which is embedded in the prices of goods and services during the production process"”might be appropriate, particularly as a way of financing other tax cuts. He's not the only Republican to speak favorably of a VAT. Herman Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan featured a flat tax and national sales tax. Very few people realized, however, that the final 9 was a VAT.
