R2P: Libya Intervention a Historic Milestone
Francesco Femia, Wash NoteWhen explaining his decision to authorize a military intervention in Libya (which he actually did well before Monday's speech), President Obama stated: "We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy." There was history in that statement. It was the latest affirmation of a human rights movement that grew out of an unexpectedly violent decade.Following the brutal massacres committed in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda in the 1990s, the world asked itself -- at what point is it our responsibility to stop the slaughter of innocent people?

At Japan Plant, One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
Nearly three weeks after the earthquake and tsunami wreaked havoc on an aging nuclear power plant on Japan's Pacific coast, officials handling the crisis face multiplying hurdles, making the end goal of a stable facility with a functioning cooling system seem further from reach.
How I Became a Burn Victim, with a Sprained Ankle to Boot
It was a foggy night on the Tuolumne River, with average evening temperatures settling in the low 50s. We had decided to set up camp at Indian, just under a mile downriver from Powerhouse. My fellow rafting mates were finally asleep after a long night of sharing jokes by the campfire and enjoying a brewski [...]

Growing Up Mixed, Blended In The New American Family
New census figures show that the number of mixed-race Americans has grown by nearly 50 percent in the last ten years. And that rise in number is most pronounced in the South. Census data also reveals that 17 percent of kids in the U.S live in blended families. In Tell Me More's weekly parenting conversation, host Michel Martin explores the experiences of mixed-race and blended families. Weighing in on the discussion is Suzy Richardson, founder of the website, MixedandHappy.com, Karyn Langhorne Folan, author of Don't Bring Home A White Boy: And Other Notions That Keep Black Women from Dating Out and NPR editor Davar Ardalan.
U.S. Mulls Arming Libyan Rebels
The Obama administration is taking the position that the United Nations arms embargo on Libya does not prohibit countries from providing arms to the rebels who are fighting to overthrow the Gadhafi regime. The U.S. argument is that by authorizing "all necessary measures" to protect civilians in Libya, the U.N. Security Council allowed an exception to the arms embargo. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that no "decision" has been made to provide arms to the rebels, but other U.S. officials say it is under active consideration. NPR's Tom Gjelten speaks to Michele Norris about the latest.

Unyielding President Leaves Some Unswayed

Obama and American Power
John Judis, The New RepublicPresidents and secretaries of state have not always come entirely clean in explaining why they were doing things, especially military actions. They tend to leave out key motives: Think of Ronald Reagan invading Grenada in 1982 to save medical students who unaccountably found themselves in danger; George H.W. Bush conjuring up Iraqi atrocities in Kuwait, but not mentioning Iraqi control of global oil; or George W. Bush invoking Saddam’s nuclear arsenal to justify an invasion of Iraq.

Is It 1848 in the Arab World?
Leon Neyfakh, Boston GlobeThe feeling of witnessing history as it unfolds before your eyes is one of those singular and uncanny things that really deserves its own word in German. It’s a feeling many of us have gotten used to over the past several months, thanks in large part to events in the Middle East that have appeared every bit as dramatic as anything we ever read in our high school textbooks. Processing the unrest in real time from half a world away has been humbling: The speed of events, and the fact that no one saw them coming, has made even short-term predictions seem like a fool’s errand.

The Nuance on Libya is Not Working
Mark Thompson, TimeThis is a word that crops up whenever a military coalition gets underway. It's like making laws, sausage or journalism -- messy up close. Generally, there's a week or two of bumps, and then smooth sailing. Sometimes -- like in Iraq, for example -- it can take years, but that's due more to inept U.S. planning and resourcing than any alliance issues. The challenge for the Obama Administration is that it went from downplaying the notion of a no-fly zone to flying one almost overnight. Congress felt -- heck, it was -- caught unawares. The White House consulted the UN more...

Victor Davis Hanson, National ReviewGas is well over $4 a gallon in most places in California -- and soaring elsewhere as well. But are such high energy prices good or bad? That should be a stupid question. Last week, President Obama went to Brazil and declared of that country's new offshore finds: "With the new oil finds off Brazil, President (Dilma) Rousseff has said that Brazil wants to be a major supplier of new...

Miracle March has been at it again in western Washington. The storms started to roll in the second week of February and haven't stopped since. This time of year is the holy grail to most snowboarders; strong legs, long days and healthy snowpack have the knuckle draggers on high stoke. I wasn't living in Washington when Mt Baker broke the world record for snowfall in 98-99, but now I know what the old boys are talking about. Baker has enough snow for June kicker sessions; the snow has been falling, the temps have been low and the skies have been grey.
“Greybird” is a term we use when discussing the lighting while trying to capture images via megapixel. Dylan Hart has a trained trigger finger and has been firing off shots for the masses. Shooting in minimal light is a hearty task. Greybird loves to flirt. She flies in and out bringing her light for a minute only to snatch it back once "drop" is yelled. The show must go on. It takes a trained lenseman to search out and find snow features that will photograph in these conditions.
Shawn Freyer and Byron Bagwell headed out with Dylan for a day to play with greybird. We got him to share the outcome with you. Have fun and stay safe out there.

At Crippled Reactors, Is Time On Our Side?
Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant hasn't been rocked by major incident in a couple of days. But the situation hasn't really improved, either. Are we in a "race against time," as the U.N.'s nuclear watchdog put it, or can we start to breathe easier as time goes on? The answer seems to be: It depends.

What's Our Plan in Libya?
James Jay Carafano, New York PostJudging from his press conference yesterday, it seems President Obama is unaware of the oldest maxim in war -- "The enemy gets a vote."Hours earlier, for example, Libyan Foreign Minister Musa Kusa declared to journalists in Tripoli that the regime had declared a ceasefire -- so there was (supposedly) no threat to civilians and thus no justification for bombing his troops.

The Great Midwestern Backlash
Andrew Leonard, SalonIn 2008, Barack Obama carried Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio, three crucial Midwestern states in which he had campaigned unceasingly. Two years later, the midterm tidal wave handed monolithic control of the state legislature and governor's mansion in each state over to Republicans. The new governors, Wisconsin's Scott Walker, Ohio's John Kasich and Michigan's Rick Snyder, immediately and forcefully moved to exploit their power in pursuit of bold Republican agendas. We're not just talking good old-fashioned budget-balancing mandated cuts in public services. The grandiose...

Japan Tries To Cool Damaged Nuclear Reactors
In Japan, workers are struggling to gain control over reactors at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant damaged by last Friday's earthquake and tsunami. Japan aborted a helicopter mission to dump water on the reactor Wednesday evening. Michele Norris talks to NPR's Richard Harris.

Public sector job cuts top 132,000 (Guardian)
Latest ONS figures show central and local government redundancies accelerating
? with 32,000 education jobs lost in the last three months alone
More than 132,000 jobs were lost from the public sector last year according to
the latest figures which show redundancies across central and local government
gathering pace with an alarming number of jobs cuts in education.
Some 45,000 public sector jobs were lost in the last three months of 2010
including 32,000 in schools and colleges.
The figures are partly attributed to the government's recruitment freeze but
the increasing pace suggests that the coalition's cuts are beginning to
translate into job losses. It is now known that overall 170,000 local
government workers have been issued with 'at risk' notices, which will still
take some months to translate into redundancies.
There was also a surprise rise of 9,000 extra employees in public
administration, raising questions about whether the government is managing to
reduce the cost of administration. Every government department currently has a
target to cut at least 30% of its central costs by 2015.
The total number of unemployed people increased by 27,000 in the three months
to January to reach 2.53m, the highest figure ...Share With Friends: | | Politics - Top Stories News, News Feeds and News via Feedzilla.

Crowley Out Over Manning Outburst (Powerlineblog.com)

State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley has been erratic for a while, but he
went too far when, at M.I.T. on Thursday, he called the Defense Department's
handling of Private Bradley Manning "ridiculous and counterproductive and
stupid." Today Crowley resigned from his State Department position.
Reflexive leftism is pretty common at State, and I suppose this was a classic
gaffe, _i.e._, Crowley said what he actually believed. Still, it is hard to
understand how Crowley could have thought it would be OK to slam the Defense
Department. Isn't the State Department supposed to be all about diplomacy?
Isn't it a bit weird that they can't come up with a spokesman who is
diplomatic enough not to insult the guys on his own side?

Jobs Growing Slowly, Wages Falling Fast
Robert Reich, SF ChronicleAre we making progress on the jobs front? Just barely. And that's not even the big story, which I'll get to in a moment. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 192,000 new jobs in February (220,000 new jobs in the private sector and a decline in government employment), and a drop in the overall unemployment rate from 9 to 8.9 percent. It looks as if we're heading in the right direction. But the progress is far too slow to make a real dent in unemployment. To get the unemployment rate down to 6 percent by 2014, we'd need more than 300,000 new jobs a month, every month,...
