Supreme Court Hears Plea Bargain Cases
The two cases involve defendants who got prison terms much longer than they would have under plea bargains offered by the prosecutor. In one case, the defendant's lawyer never told his client about the offer. In the other, the defense lawyer advised against taking the offer based on a clearly erroneous understanding of state law.

Herman Cain's Long Odds Get Lengthier After Sex Harassment Report
Obviously, we can't know now how this will all play out. There's evidence some conservatives are rallying around him, seeing the revelation as a dirty trick by liberals. Some see similarities to sexual harassment bomb that went off during the Senate confirmation hearings for Justice Clarence ThomasBut there's also the suspicion that Cain is on the receiving end of oppo research by one of his rival Republican candidates.

Reassessing Obama's Foreign Policy "Success"
Michael Barone, ExaminerThe argument is being made in some quarters that, however unsuccessful Barack Obama's domestic policies have been, his record in foreign policy has been successful. But when you examine the claims of success, they seem a bit peculiar.Take the widely read New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman. Last week, he argued that Obama's "lead from behind" approach to Libya worked much better than what turned out to be the Bush administration's protracted involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. He's certainly right in saying our troops are not mired down in Libya. But...

Next Fiscal Nightmare: Higher Education
Debra Saunders, SF ChronicleOne of the great things about America, President Barack Obama told students at the University of Colorado, is that no matter how humble your roots, you still have a shot at a great education. He also told students that his goal is to "make college more affordable." Alas, the president's prescription for making higher education affordable seems likely to yield the same results as his plan for curbing health care costs; that is, it is likely to drive prices higher than inflation. The nation's next fiscal nightmare may well be a higher-education bubble.Americans now owe more...

Oil & Gas Had Help. Why Not Renewables?
Robert Semple, New York TimesThe bankruptcy of a single solar-panel company, Solyndra, has catapulted the question of federal energy policies into the news. It has also led many people to draw exactly the wrong conclusions about federal support for energy innovation and where the policies should be headed.Solyndra was clearly a bad bet for the government, which now stands to lose all or part of about $500 million in loan guarantees. But one case hardly discredits the whole idea of government support for energy innovation. The federal government has always been in the energy business, and with good reason. Private capital...

Why Is Obama Sending Troops to Africa?
Max Fisher, The AtlanticWhen the Lord's Resistance Army showed up in the Central African Republican village of Obo in 2008, everyone who refused to join them was killed. One of the men they scooped up, Daba Emmanuel, would spend the next year as one of the LRA's slave-soldiers. Indoctrinated, abused, and eventually forced to perform raids like the one against Obo, he survived to tell journalist Graeme Wood his story. "We killed the old immediately, and kept the young for work," Emmanuel said. Recalling one raid on a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he told Wood that his small LRA...

More Gov't Will Reduce Health Costs
Froma Harrop, Providence Journal"Home-Health Firms Blasted." The headline refers to a Senate Finance Committee finding that major providers of home-based services to Medicare patients were bilking the government program.
